I put half of the crushed candy canes into my cookie dough…now what should I do with the second half?

I’ve tried these a couple of times and they always come out lovely, however, the recipe doesn’t tell you when to add the second half of candy canes. I’ve been adding them before cooking, but then they just disappear into the cookie. Should they be added after cooking? (Also, at 40g per ball, I only get about 20 cookies and not 36?!)

Absolutely superb recipe!! Won the office bake off competition with these beauties. And have just made up a batch of the dough to freeze and then bake on Boxing Day. Absolute Xmas classic
